What is Integrative Counselling?

My name is Abel Leung and I am a qualified counsellor having trained in various counselling and psychotherapy approaches. I have over 10 years of clinical experience working directly and therapeutically with adult clients (18 or above) who are experiencing difficulties with mental health.

Issues that I have worked with include depression, generalised anxiety and worry, panic, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), health anxiety, social anxiety, relationship problems, bereavement, work stress, domestic abuse, difficult up-bringing, traumatic experiences, low self esteem, etc. I have experience of working in the NHS mental health care setting, alongside with multidisciplinary teams, working in GP practices, community setting, and physical health settings.

Choosing to begin therapy is a very brave step. I can imagine mixed feelings of uncertainty and vulnerability, at the same time you could be having a deep yearning for change, an aspiration for breakthrough, personal growth and greater awareness.

I believe that effective therapy is based on a therapeutic relationship that promotes trust, respect, collaboration and partnership. Helping you to feel safe in therapy is always my utmost priority. This allows us to explore presenting difficulties in a non-judgemental and honest way, giving us the grounding to withstand and work through difficult feelings.

I can offer both short term and long term therapy. I am initially trained in using the cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) approach and can offer this to client if this is what we collaboratively agreed on. Over the years of my practice I come to realise that there is no one size fit all model when it comes to understanding human difficulties. I therefore took on further training to develop an integrative and relational approach to counselling.

My combined approach to counselling includes elements of Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT), Gestalt Therapy, Person Centred Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Attachment Theory, Transactional Analysis and Solution Focused Therapy. I place huge emphasis on developing and maintaining our therapeutic relationship, which  informs our treatment plan by taking into consideration your personal circumstances, your unique style of thinking, feeling and being, as well as a shared understanding of psychological theories and knowledge which can be relevant to your experience.
